“Any variation from good health has a cause, and the cause has a location. Osteopathy aids to locate and remove the cause, doing away with disease and getting health instead.” -AT Still
Osteopathy is a therapeutic approach of examination and treatment of a wide range of health problems. This complementary approach was developed by Andrew Taylor Still, a physician and surgeon in the United States of America in the mid-1800s using various techniques including, deep tissue massage, articulation, mobilisation and manipulation of joints to improve function, relieve pain and aid recovery.
In recent years the education of Osteopathic practitioners has included an extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, introductions to neurology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, embryology as well as a vast range of Osteopathic techniques. What this means is your practitioner will look at the body, how it functions as a whole. The focus being on the wellbeing of the individual, assessing how bones, muscles, ligaments, and other structures harmonise with each other and attempt to restore the body to a state of balance.
Your treatment does not end in the treatment room as your Osteopath is also trained in the use of exercise prescription, lifestyle advice and stretches, as well as signposting you when necessary to appropriate healthcare practitioners.
